Orange County's excellent and irrefutable reputation as a tourist destination gave it its own television series, The O, C. The county's main tourist attractions are its beaches and, of course, its two theme parks, Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. The county is a tourist hub, with attractions such as Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Modjeska House, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Yost Theater, Bowers Museum, Balboa Island, Angel Stadium, Downtown Santa Ana, Honda Center and several popular beaches along its more than 40 miles (64 km) of coastline. It is also home to a major research university, the University of California, Irvine (UCI), along with other notable colleges and universities, such as Chapman University and Cal State Fullerton.
A severe drought in the 1860s devastated the predominant industry, livestock farming and much of the land passed into the hands of Richard O'Neill, Sr. In 1887, silver was discovered in the Santa Ana Mountains, attracting settlers through the Santa Fe and South Pacific Railroads. Other citrus, avocado and oil extraction crops were also important for the early economy. Orange County benefited from the completion of the Pacific Electric Railway, a trolley connecting Los Angeles to Santa Ana and Newport Beach on July 4, 1904. The liaison made Orange County an accessible weekend retreat for early Hollywood celebrities.
It was considered so important that Pacific City changed its name to Huntington Beach in honor of Henry E. Huntington, President of Pacific Electric and Nephew of Collis Huntington. Transportation further improved with the completion of State Route and the U, S. Route 101 (now mostly interstate) in the 1920s.
The Santa Ana River is the county's main watercourse, which flows through the center of the county from northeast to southwest. Its main tributary to the south and east is Santiago Creek. Other waterways within the county include Aliso Creek, San Juan Creek and Horsethief Creek. In the north, the San Gabriel River also briefly crosses Orange County and exits to the Pacific on the Los Angeles-Orange County line between the cities of Long Beach and Seal Beach.
Laguna Beach is home to the county's only natural lakes, Laguna Lakes, which are formed by water rising against an underground fault. Cultural and entertainment facilities include the Disneyland Resort, Angel Stadium, Christ Cathedral (formerly the Crystal Cathedral), City National Grove of Anaheim, a live concert venue, Discovery Cube Orange County, Honda Center, home of the NHL (National Hockey League) Anaheim Ducks and the Anaheim Convention Center. Health care facilities include CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County), Kaiser Permanente Health Pavilion (Anaheim), St. Joseph Hospital (Orange) and ICU Medical Center.
Retail complexes include Anaheim GardenWalk, Anaheim Marketplace (which claims to be the largest indoor exchange gathering in Orange County with more than 200 vendors), MainPlace Mall, Orange Town & Country and The Outlets at Orange, originally a mall called The City that was the centerpiece of a mixed-use planned development of the 70s with the same name. There is a strip-style commercial development that includes large retailers along West Chapman Avenue in Orange (Marshalls, Ralphs), along Harbor Boulevard in Garden Grove (Burlington, Ross Dress for Less) and around Harbor Blvd. Orange County is a founding county of California; its seat is Santa Ana. Seymour (formerly Mayor of Anaheim) and U, S. Former Congressman Christopher Cox (of Newport Beach), President Reagan's White House advisor, is also a former president of the United States,. Orange County was also home to former Republican Congressman John G. Schmitz, 1972 presidential candidate of the ultraconservative American Independent Party and father of Mary Kay Letourneau.
In 1996, Curt Pringle (later Mayor of Anaheim) became the first Republican president of the California State Assembly in decades. Tourism Remains a Vital Aspect of Orange County's Economy. Anaheim is the premier tourist center, and Disneyland Resort's Disneyland Resort is the second most visited theme park in the world. In addition, Knotts Berry Farm receives around 7 million visitors a year and is located in the city of Buena Park.
The Anaheim Convention Center holds many important conventions throughout the year. Resorts within Beach Cities welcome visitors all year round due to their proximity to the beach, bike trails, mountain hiking trails, golf courses, shops and restaurants. Locals and visitors often divide Orange County into three sections in order to know where to go. Northern Orange County is known for its theme parks and has the best tourist infrastructure in the county.
Downtown Orange County includes the oldest and most densely populated sections of the county and is a haven for those seeking Victorian architecture, as well as ethnic enclaves for Latinos and Vietnamese. Southern Orange County has relatively underdeveloped areas with newer subdivisions and high-tech industries. A less formal destination is the Orange County coastline, which stretches from north to south and covers beach areas and those who enjoy water activities such as surfing, sailing and swimming. Culture lovers can find plenty to eat at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, which contains an opera house, concert hall and two theatres.
It is located across Bristol Street from South Coast Plaza, the largest shopping mall on the West Coast. This shopper's mecca has more than 250 shops and 30 restaurants. The city of Orange straddles the border between North and South Orange County and is located at the junction of Highways 5, 57 and 22. Highway 55 crosses its western end. The city is known for its Circle, which is a square that houses an ancient fountain and is surrounded by Victorian-era commercial buildings.
The city hosts a popular and crowded street fair during Labor Day weekends. Orange County hugs the coast in Southern California, located south of Los Angeles County, north of San Diego County and west of Riverside County. Orange County SC is a United Soccer League team and is the only professional football club in Orange County. Other ranches in Orange County were granted by the Mexican government during the Mexican period in Alta California.
The lines include Orange County, 91 and Inland Empire-Orange County, and total about 40 trains per day. Although Barbara Boxer won statewide, and did better in Orange County than in 1998, Republican Bill Jones defeated her in the county, 51% to 43%. Orange County is bordered on the southwest by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Los Angeles County, on the northeast by San Bernardino County, on the east by Riverside County, and on the southeast by San Diego County.
With home games played at the Grand Orange County Grand Park Championship Soccer Stadium, the team seeks to grow in the Orange County community and achieve continued success. As one of the southernmost counties in the state, Orange County remains the premier region for beach vacations in California. The majority of the population lives in central and northern Orange County, and cities such as Fullerton, Anaheim, Orange and Huntington Beach have traditional centers. Another region of Orange County is the Orange Coast, which includes the six cities bordering the Pacific Ocean.
